"for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?"

Baking for freshers week! Doesn't matter if you havent cafeprojectbaked before. Meet at the cafe, then we'll head over to the awesome Wesley Church kitchen. Bring a recipe (not too complicated!) if you have one in mind, and any special ingredients. The cafe has the basics, or we can nip down to Sainsburys.

Start: 17:00
End: 23:00

Opening early for Freshers Week!

Remember to fill in the normal time slots before the 5:30-7:30 shift to make sure we have enough volunteers to ensure regular opening times.

The Cambridge University Freshers' Fair is the best opportunity of the year for the Cafe Project to advertise its existance to the student population, and to recruit a whole load of volunteers!  We need a couple of volunteers at a time to stand behind our stall at the freshers fair in kelsey kerridge sports centre for the two days of the fair, giving out Cafe Project flyers and termcards, and collecting email addresses of freshers who sign down to our mailing list.  It would be good if plenty of us signed up to do this - so no-one has to spend hours and hours at the stall.  The slots have been put down as 'waiter' jobs, but really it's publicising at the fair.

---The Fair goes on for 2 days - Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th of October - there are volunteer slots for both.---

Cambridge No to ID campaign (www.no2id.net) will be showing the film 'taking liberties' in the Cafe from 8pm. The cafe will be open from 7.30, to give people a chance to buy their film snacks and tea...

"TAKING LIBERTIES is a shocking but hilarious polemic documentary that charts the destruction of all your Basic Liberties under 10 Years of New Labour. Released to coincide with Tony Blair's departure, the film and the book follow the stories of normal people who's lives have been turned upside down by injustice - from being arrested for holding a placard outside parliament to being tortured in Guantanamo Bay." - http://www.noliberties.com/

As the people showing the film will be there, we only need one volunteer to serve drinks. And watch the film! So sign up...

Welfare Wednesdays @ the Cafe Project

This year, CUSU Welfare wants to start tackling some of the taboo subjects that Welfare Campaigns deal with: ‘Why are we living through a sexual health epidemic in this country?’, ‘How can we promote positive body image and tackle eating disorders?’, ‘How does student depression affect studies?’.  To truly tackle these issues we need to start understanding them from the grass roots.  Every week, CUSU Welfare will be posing controversial questions to do with a range of issues and invite you to come and discuss them with us.  The cafe project is hosting it: helping us bring together students and the local community and get to grips with welfare issues affecting our society today.  For more information email welfare@cusu.cam.ac.uk or come along, Wednesdays from 5-6.30 during term time (15th October to 3rd December).

Start: 19:30
End: 23:00

Join us for an evening of discussion, learning and meeting people run by the Cambridge Hub, a network of  community, campaigning and charitable student organisations. Each Wednesday in termtime, a different member society will run a short timetabled event - a talk, a workshop, a film - from 8 to 9pm - followed by informal cafe sociableness until closing time.  Come along to find out more about what Hub societies are doing in Cambridge, get to know people who are concerned about social justice and global issues, and make the links between societies which can be stronger by working together.

Start: 17:30

Come along to find out more about the cafe project and to get involved in the decision making process!

CUID open debates are informal discussion groups which meet every other Thursday at the Cafe Project on Jesus Lane to talk about development issues. They are quite small scale and participants are encouraged to share their views with the rest of the group. A small amount of prior knowledge is usually required, but this first session is an introduction.

In this first session our open debate leader, Joe Studwell, will talk about what he thinks are the most important contributing factors in developmental success and why his expertise in Asia has led him to this conclusion. This first discussion sets the scene for the series and invites those attending to challenge Joe's 'big picture', suggest alternatives and pose questions to be addressed during the series.
